Portland Classical Chinese Garden
Transport yourself to ancient China as you enter Lan Su Yuan. The Portland Classical Chinese Garden is a harmonizing blend of water, architecture, stone, and poetry against a richly planted landscape. Overlooking the lake, the Tao of Tea teahouse features more than 35 teas and Chinese snacks. Never twice the same, the garden is open April-October, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; November-March, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Tucked above the International Rose Test Garden, The Japanese Garden has been proclaimed one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside Japan. Five traditional garden styles, a ceremonial teahouse and a pavilion combine to capture the mood of ancient Japan. A haven of tranquil beauty, the Japanese Garden covers 5.5 acres and has a magnificent view of Portland and the surrounding mountains. Open daily, April 1-Sept. 30, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Oct. 1-March 31, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Open Mondays at noon.

Visit one of the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the country — for free. The International Rose Test Garden, just minutes from downtown Portland in Washington Park, has 7,000 rose bushes, spectacular views of the city and an onsite Rose Garden Gift Shop (call for hours). The garden is open daily, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Local tip: During summer, visit in the early evening when it’s cooler and less crowded. Additionally, Peninsula Park Rose Garden has 6,500 rose plantings and is located in North Portland; and Ladd’s Addition Garden, which features 3,000 roses, sits in the historic southeast Portland neighborhood of the same name.

Portland Saturday Market is where unique artists await discovery. The Portland Saturday Market — open Sundays too — is the largest continuously operated open-air arts and crafts market in the nation. Talk directly to the artists and learn about their creative styles and products. Rain or shine, the market is open Saturday (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) from March through Christmas Eve. The Portland Saturday Market is located in Portland’s historic Old Town District under the west end of the Burnside Bridge.
